Bedding 101: Difference Between Pima Cotton & Egyptian Cotton Percale Sheets
While we love talking about all things bedding – we won’t deny that it can get very difficult to choose between different types of sheets and understanding which one's would be ideal for you.
Out of so many bedding options, Cotton Percale Sheets have been the talk of the town for a while now. These sheets have two options: Pima Cotton Sheets and Egyptian Cotton Sheets.
So, what’s different between these two and are they worth the investment? Let’s find out!
Production
Like their individual names suggest – both of these types of sheets are produced from different sources. Pima Cotton Sheets are made from a cotton plant called Gossypium Barbadense, found in tropical areas. This plant produces extra-long fibers that are put together using a percale weave grid-like pattern that resultantly produce the Pima Cotton Sheets.
On the other hand, the Egyptian Cotton Sheets like the name suggests grow from the Egyptian Cotton plant that grows along the river Nile in Egypt. They also have slightly long fibers and follow a percale weave.
Thread Count
One key difference between the two is that Pima Cotton Sheets have a higher thread count and have a thread count of 500, whereas Egyptian Cotton Sheets have a thread count of 400. This difference in thread counts means that Pima Cotton Sheets have a slightly softer feel to it as compared to the other one.
Features And Functionality
Pima Cotton Sheets can be easily described as being made from 100% Pima Cotton – which means they are made from extremely high quality that gives the sheets a profoundly soft feel to them. They have a crisp and matte finish to it which means that they won't wrinkle easily. Moreover, they also have moisture-wicking qualities that make these the perfect sheets for people who suffer from night sweats!
On the flip side, Egyptian Cotton Sheets are made from 100% Egyptian Cotton. They have very high breathability qualities and have long thin fibers that produce very fine fabric that resultantly create sheets that are extremely light-weight. These sheets also have extra-cooling features which mean that they can help keep you cool all night long during the summers.
Are There Any Similarities?
Pima Cotton Sheets and Egyptian Cotton Sheets are both made from a percale weave. These percale sheets are made from a one-over-one-under combination that allows both of them to have a very soft feel when you touch the sheets and are often compared with the softness of sateen bamboo sheets.
